Age? 23
Where you are from? I'm originally from Slovakia, and currently live in NYC
What made want to start making jewelry? The jewelry is actually an extension of my sculptural practice. I work in all mediums, and I've started working with adornment as a way to challenge myself by creating something that has to be wearable and work within the parameters of a market. I have always been interested in the human body, more specifically the way in which we can extend our body awareness through dress (or restrict it), the challenges that come with dress as a text upon the body of the wearer and the like. also, I've always been a maker in the sense that I find pleasure in creating objects and being engaged in the process of doodling and ritual repetition.
Where do you get your inspiration for your pieces? that varies- I am always inspired by architecture, textures, decay, painting techniques, plastics, images, video...the list goes on. I usually take an inspiration and apply it to a problem or a set of boundaries in order to make something new. Also, the knowledge I gain in my art practice is always influencing the design and vice versa. Also, the BLOGOSPHERE! What an amazing resource for visual data!
Are your things sold in any stores? I am currently in conversation with a few boutiques here in NYC regarding that, but I'm contemplating whether it would be best to set up an independent online venue for this like an etsy shop. The bruised economy is most certianly making me reconsider the way s to sell, but as someone fully engrossed in the business of deigning and making, I care very little for money or ht selling of things making it difficult to delegate valuable time. At the moment you can contact me directly if you would like to purchase anything at eugenia.semjonova@gmail.com
One of your pieces involve real human hair, where do you get that? ( I know it's weird, but we wanna know! ) Actually, the hair I have used for the headband featured on Sea of Shoes is made from fine virgin European hair I have purchased from a store specializing in wigs, headpieces, and extensions. It's quite expensive, but very soft and very much a couture item that will last for an incredibly long time if taken care of appropriately.
Do you hope to be doing this forever? I hope to continue being a maker, and to get closer everyday of refining my visions within the physical, so yes.
Do you think you will be making jewelry forever? Well, actually, jewelry is only a small part of my creative output, so it will most likely come and go as I pursue my other artistic goals
Who are some of your favorite designers? that's a VERY tough one. I've been inspired by the austerity of Belgian design through and through, and the people coming out of Antwerp at the moment always take my breath away. I am also a fan of Zanotti and Rossi for shoes, of Kane's eclecticism, and Yohi's uncompromising austerity and formalism, of Jeremy Scott's street know-how and the brutish smartness, Narelle Dore, Karl Fischl's jewelry, and others. I am also most inspired by the collection of young sound and visuals i encounter day in n out, and of course i Be Area is like a personal mantra.
You have a blog Doooooo000o0))00oM, there are rumors that you are going to stop posting, is that true? Well, I actually did stop posting and went on a sabbatical traveling and cutting the cord with humanity. However, I've returned with the firm decision to keep a distance from it and to use it to share my visions with the world, as opposed to letting it use me. it's all a matter of perspective really. Also, my computer is ALWAYS bursting at the seams with information, so the blog is a way to edit and keep the most important references for later viewing.
What do you like better, blogging or working on your art?
I used to look at blogging as a necessary evil, but I've found that I've encountered many amazing people through it,so my opinion has changed. However, makin' stuff is the saving grace.
